Plans, Houses and the 1900's
A View of the Past
Many changes had occurred from Sir Richard Horner Paget's original plans for the triangle of Victoria, Bushbury and Cannock Road. It may be to some belief that the first six houses have changed significantly since they were built. However, it pleases me to say that this is not true. Some internal features (such as cast iron fireplaces) have been removed in four or five of the houses, changes which occurred during the 80's or earlier, the periods whereupon upstairs bathrooms were input to the middle 4 houses which did not originally have them. Outdoor lavatories did exist in small outhouses, some of which have been reconnected to the inside of the houses to form a small downstairs, indoor lavatory (as has been done in my house), demolished or are used as storage places. The deeds of my house state the names of every person who has lived in my house, including original plans of the outlay of the houses from the Garden Suburb Movement, with Sir Richard Paget's name actually being on them. I myself, find it fascinating how my house and my school are linked in a way which has been forgotten and lost throughout the decades. Doing this project has brought, to me, the light of the real history of the area and my own house, as well as the very interesting history of my school and the grounds it stands on.
