A Brief History of
Wolverhampton
(985 A.D.-1900)
Wolverhampton has an interesting and varying history, most commonly known to have begun when Lady Wulfruna was granted land at Heantune. However, settlers may have been likely to have lived in the area long before 985A.D. It later became a small town, involved in the wool trade, and later suffered some disastrous fires. The town quickly recovered, despite the damage done, and played an important part to the history of the Industrial Revolution. Wolverhampton, with its canal routes connecting to the rest of Britian, contributed its efforts greatly to industry and mining, steel works and lock and key making. The town later entertained a royal visit from Queen Victoria, unveiling a new statue of Prince Albert which can still be seen today. Wolverhampton's history has been a spiral of farming, disaster, poverty and contribution, with some interesting and intriguing fires, plots and visits along the way.
