Brother J.Claver's Humorous Translations
Memories from Tom Kenny
The following account has been taken from a booklet containing memories from Tom Kenny who was a student at the school between 1943-1949.
"Brother enters class looking in a bad mood and write on Blackboard---"CAESAR AD SUM IAM FORTE" with instructions to translate pronto or else! Feverishly we look up words to find maybe "CAESAR PRESENT ALREADY STRONG??" Brother J.Claver (I think) reveals his joke! CAESAR HAD SOME JAM FOR TEA.
Another such flighty and rare attempt at the humorous was, I think it was, by Brother Aiden who was only at the school for a short time when Brother J.CLaver and Brother Brice were visiting family in America; as follows: on Blackbooard "PAS D'ELLE YEAUX RHONE QUE NOUS" with the usual "translate or else request!" Frantic dictionary references to, "NO OF SHE, EYE THE RHONE, THAT US??"produced nothing until we were informed by delighted master that if we said it well pronounced and quickly it would be clear to us. Thus, "PADDLE YOUR OWN CANOE".
